Why Are Some Religions Steadfastly Against Cremation Services?

Is your religion on board with cremation? In recent years, many religions have come around to the idea of allowing cremation services in Kingsbridge, NY and have told people that they can choose cremation if they want. Catholicism and many of the branches of Christianity are now permitting people to go with cremation. But there are still some religions that are steadfastly against cremation. Here’s why some of them still won’t allow it.

Judaism

According to Jewish law, a person’s body must be buried in the ground at the time of their death. This is the only acceptable thing to do with a person’s body when they die. It seems unlikely that most Jewish people are going to move away from this belief anytime soon, but there are some smaller segments of Jewish people that have started to open their minds up to cremation. Those who practice Reform Judaism have begun to allow cremation. Still, it doesn’t appear as though this practice is going to seep into Orthodox Judaism anytime soon.

Islam

While Judaism has been against cremation for a long time and feels very strongly about it, you could argue that no one is against cremation more than those who are of the Islamic faith. Islam considers Kingsbridge, NY cremation to be a practice that is unclean, and as a result, Muslim people aren’t allowed to be cremated or even be associated with cremation in any way. This means that those who practice Islam aren’t allowed to witness a cremation or attend any cremation services. Muslims believes that the human body should be treated with the exact same dignity and respect that it was treated with during a person’s life.

Mormonism

Mormonism hasn’t put an outright ban on cremation like some other religions have, but Mormons also aren’t walking around encouraging people to choose cremation. Mormons believe that there is a connection between a person’s body and their soul that should not be broken by cremation. Therefore, they advise against people choosing cremation unless it happens to be required by law where they live. You’ll find that most Mormons ask to be buried as opposed to cremated thanks to their belief system.

Where does your religion stand on cremation?

Cremation isn’t something that’s discussed much during religious services. You won’t walk into many churches or other places of worship and find cremation on the tips of everyone’s tongues. This means that you should take the time to research where your religion stands when it comes to cremation before you decide whether you want to be buried or cremated. You might be surprised to see what your religion has to say about cremation when you do a little bit of digging. You might also be surprised to see where you stand on cremation once you’ve learned more about what your religion thinks about it.
