Rhoda Onofri

Rhoda Onofri, 90, a resident of Blauvelt for 53 years, died on June 5 at Saint Joseph’s Medical Center in Yonkers. She was born in Manhattan, grew up in Washington Heights and graduated from George Washington High School. She retired in 1991 from the Department of Motor Vehicles in West Haverstraw and had previously worked for Mount Sinai Hospital and the Book of the Month Club in Manhattan. She married Giacomo "Ugo" Onofri in January 1956, and they lived in Briarwood, Queens, until moving to Blauvelt in 1964. Over the years they hosted innumerable out-of-town visitors, holiday dinners, family gatherings and other parties in their home. Many people got to know Rhoda from her annual garage sale. She was extraordinarily sociable and had an irrepressible, generous spirit; if somebody needed a ride, a home-cooked meal, clean laundry or anything else, Rhoda could be counted on to provide. She took an interest in everybody and spoke to all those she met as if she'd known them forever. Rhoda loved New York City but also enjoyed traveling as well as theater and the movies. She served as president of the Friends of the Blauvelt Library in the 1970s and remained an avid supporter of local libraries and the cultural life of Rockland County. She was a longtime member of the Unitarian-Universalist Congregation in Pomona. Her beloved husband, Ugo, passed away in 1998. She is survived by her two daughters, Lisa of White Plains and Adrienne of Elmhurst, Queens; her son-in-law, Daniel W. Scott, and almost her son-in-law, Kevin Belmont; a sister, Louise Jones of Minneapolis; and nieces, nephews and cousins, including some by marriage in Italy.  Visitation Thursday from 6-8 pm at Riverdale-on-Hudson Funeral Home, 6110 Riverdale Avenue, Bronx NY. Funeral Service Friday morning at 10 am at the funeral home. Burial Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hastings-on-Hudson NY.
