Mary Bridget (nee Gaughan) Monaghan
Monaghan, Mary Bridget (nee Gaughan). “Bridie” went home to our Lord on April 28, 2020. She was 88 years old. Born to Marea and John Gaughan on January 22, 1932 in Bangor, Co. Mayo, Ireland, she was the eighth of eleven children. As a child, she excelled in school and had an innate curiosity about everything. At the tender age of 18 years, she left Ireland to join the Convent of the Sisters of Consolation in London, England. It was during this time, that Bridie discovered her true vocation was nursing and so left England in 1957 to join her brothers in America. As a Registered Nurse for over 45 years, she graced the lives of many with her knowledge, skill, professionalism and kindness. She retired from Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City in 2000. After meeting “the man of my dreams”, Bridie married Patrick Monaghan on May 16, 1959. The couple became the proud parents of two boys: Patrick and John. She was a loving and supportive mother-in-law to Mary Theresa and Maura. Of the many roles in her life, she most cherished being “Grandma Bridie” to her seven grandchildren: Patrick (Sarah), Thomas (Tina), Michael, KerryAnne (Phil), Brian, Siobhan and Maura. And was wonderfully blessed with her great grandchildren – Adam and Annie. Throughout the years and the many miles, herself & Poppy would take the children on many wonderful adventures! In addition to her children & grandchildren, Bridie is survived by her brothers, Thomas & Bridie Gaughan, Christopher & Abigail Gaughan and her sisters-in-law, Mrs. Beatrice Sote and Mrs. Joan Monaghan. “Auntie Bridie” will be dearly missed by her loving nieces and nephews throughout the United States, Ireland, England, New Zealand and Australia. Our dear Mom was blessed with many wonderful friends, for whom we are so grateful. Her social calendar was always full. A loyal supporter of the New York Botanical Gardens, many happy days were spent with family and friends enjoying the beauty that only God can provide. Her strong love for family was celebrated every year at Thanksgiving when Bridie & Pat lovingly prepared a feast like no other! Thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff at Frances Schervier Center for their caring and kindness during this historically difficult time. Although we mourn our loss, we are comforted by the knowledge that she is resting in Heaven after a life well lived. We look forward to the future to celebrate Mom’s life with a Memorial Mass at a time when we can all be together again. In addition to her children & grandchildren, Bridie is survived by her brothers, Thomas & Bridie Gaughan, Christopher & Abigail Gaughan and her sisters-in-law, Mrs. Beatrice Sote and Mrs. Joan Monaghan and Mary Gaughan. “Auntie Bridie” will be dearly missed by her loving nieces and nephews throughout the United States, Ireland, England, New Zealand and Australia.
