It is with great heartfelt sadness that we announce the death of Patrick Sweeney on October 31st. He was born in County Cork, Ireland on January 10th, 1922, and he missed his 100th Birthday by 71 days. He had six brothers, Ned, Dan, Peter, Brian, Morgan and Jerry, and four sisters, Margaret, Joan, Eileen and Maura; all of which had predeceased him.

Before emigrating to the United States, he worked in England a few years. He enjoyed living in his adopted country and became a USA Naturalized Citizen in 1961. Patrick, affectionately known as Paddy, drove a New York City Bus, mostly in Manhattan for 25 years, retiring in December 1983.  After a year of retirement, he became a Security Guard at the College of Mount St Vincent and he worked there for the next 10 years.

He married Sally McGrath on February 7, 1958, at the R. C. Church of the Ascension on 107th street. They lived in Davidson Avenue in the Bronx until 1971; and from then on lived in Riverdale. Paddy and Sally were married for 43 years. He was a very devoted and supportive husband and he visited Sally daily in the nursing home to help with her with her lunch and dinner, often neglecting to eat himself.

He was very family oriented and stayed in touch with his siblings while they were alive. He was very fond of his nieces and nephews. After Sally died in 2002, he stayed in constant contact with both families.   

 He had a great memory and was a great conversationalist on current events as he watched the news and read the daily paper. It was a pleasure to be in his company. He also enjoyed travelling with local groups and made many friends.

Paddy was a devoted Catholic, going to daily mass at St Margaret’s Church. He lived his religion. Paddy was a soft spoken, mild mannered, even tempered, generous human being. He was very cooperative and easy to get along with. Everyone seems to have liked him. The nurses in the hospital and hospice were very fond of him and one of them was comforting him when he died.

A viewing will be held Monday, November 8th 2021, 4-7 pm at Riverdale-on-Hudson Funeral Home, 6110 Riverdale Avenue, Bronx NY.  Mass will be 9:45 am Tuesday, November 9th 2021, at St. Margaret of Cortona Church. Interment Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne NY. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your favorite charity in memory of Patrick Sweeney.
