John Patrick O’Malley

John Patrick O’Malley was born in the village of Keel in Achill Island, County Mayo on August 1, 1932. On May 31, 2022, John passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving children and grandchildren, and entered the eternal embrace of his Heavenly Father in the same manner which he had lived; with grace, peace, and dignity.

John is predeceased by his parents, John and Martha, and his brother Michael O’Malley of Achill Island, County Mayo; and his wife Catherine (nee Clancy), his loving wife of 52 years, at the time of her passing.

John is lovingly remembered by his daughter Martha Kelly (Michael) of Mahopac, New York; sons John O'Malley of Wappingers Falls, New York, Michael O'Malley of the Bronx, New York, and Robert O'Malley (Robert Miller) of New City, New York. John, also known as Poppy, is deeply missed by his cherished grandchildren Nicole Erin Walsh, Grace O'Malley, Colleen Kelly, Kaitlyn Kelly, Sean Kelly, Mia O'Malley, and Aidan Kelly.  John was also the caring Uncle of his beloved nieces and nephews, both here and in Ireland.

John immigrated to the United States from Cobh, County Cork in March 1956, and arrived in New York on April 1st.  Soon after arriving in the USA, John was drafted into the United States Army and began serving in 1957.  Upon completing his service with the US Army, John began his career in the wholesale meat industry joining UFCWU Local 174 where he worked for 33-years.  After retiring from Local 174, John worked another 11-years on East End Avenue for Local 32BJ.

John was introduced to Catherine Clancy in 1963, and he and Catherine were married in Holy Name of Jesus Church in Manhattan on February 20, 1965.  They took up residence in the Kingsbridge section of the Bronx, and soon became the proud parents of their four children.  They moved to Riverdale in 2010 and were happily married for more than 52-years when Catherine passed away in September 2017.  John enjoyed spending his time relishing in the accomplishments of his seven grandchildren and enjoying his summers in the Catskills at his home in Leurenkill Heights.

John joined the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Division 7, Bronx County, in 1978.  Having served as Chairman of the Standing Committee from 1982-1986.  John was delighted and honored to have been selected as the 2020 Bronx County Aide to the NYC Grand Marshal of the St. Patrick’s Day parade.

John was also a proud member of the American Legion Post #1080 in Mahopac, New York, as well as an associate member of Pioneer Engine Company #1 in Ellenville, NY.

John resided in Riverdale and was a parishioner of St. Margaret of Cortona Parish.

John’s final words to his children was to be there and to be strong for one another, knowing that we would need the strength to bear his loss.  Death will not take you away from us, your humor, kindness, and your love of life will always live in our memories.  We love you Dad and miss you so much.
