Georgina ‘Mima’ Ayra (née. Fernández)
Georgina ‘Mima’ Ayra (née. Fernández) entró a la vida eterna el 13 de julio del 2022. Georgina nació el 7 de junio del 1922 en la Habana, Cuba. Georgina era hija de Francisco Fernández García y Carmen Fuentes y hermana de Mercedes, Soila, Berta, Sarita, Titi, María Antonia, Luisito y Marito. Se casó con Rafael Ángel Ayra el 5 de octubre del 1956. Disfrutaron de un matrimonio lleno de amor. Juntos a su hija Georgina, dejaron atrás a su patria querida para buscar exilio político en España el 11 de noviembre del 1968 y luego emigraron a los Estados Unidos el 21 de marzo del 1973 estableciéndose en Union City, New Jersey. Georgina y Rafael encontraron éxito profesional en su país adoptivo, estableciendo Fayra Enterprise, una tienda de ropa en Washington Heights. Enviudada en el 2004, Georgina se mudó a Riverdale para vivir con su familia. Cariñosamente conocida como 'Mima' o 'Abuela' por todos, pronto se convirtió en un elemento fijo en los juegos de baloncesto de St. Margaret's, Bronx/Manhattan CYO y Bronx Hawks. Georgina amaba un día lleno de baloncesto rodeada de familiares y amistades. Georgina será recordada por sus seres queridos por su devoción a su fe católica, su familia, deportes (especialmente los Yankees), las croquetas, el café con leche bien clarito con mucha azúcar y el Game Show Network. A Georgina le sobreviven su hija Georgina, su yerno Angel, sus nietas Georgina, Angela y Cristina, su consuegro Angel, sus sobrinas y sobrinos, y la familia Gandia, a quienes amaba como hijos y nietos adoptivos.
El velorio será domingo, 17 de julio en la funeraria Riverdale-on-Hudson de 2 a 5 PM. La Santa Misa será lunes, 18 de julio a las 9:45 AM en la Iglesia Católica de St. Margaret of Cortona seguido por el entierro en el cementerio de Mt. Calvary en White Plains, NY. En lugar de flores, la familia pide que se hagan donaciones a Caridades Católicas de la Arquidiócesis de Nueva York en memoria de Georgina.
Georgina ‘Mima’ Ayra (née. Fernández) entered eternal rest on July 13, 2022. She was born on June 7, 1922 in Habana, Cuba. She was the child of Francisco Fernández Garcia and Carmen Fuentes and sister to Mercedes, Soila, Berta, Sarita, Titi, María Antonia, Luisito, and Marito. She married Rafael Angel Ayra on October 5, 1956. They enjoyed a long and fruitful marriage. Together, along with their daughter Georgina, they left their beloved homeland behind to seek refuge in Spain on November 11, 1968 and then immigrated to the United States on March 21, 1973 settling in Union City, New Jersey. Georgina and Rafael found professional success in their adopted country, establishing Fayra Enterprise, a clothing store in Washington Heights from the mid-1970s to the mid-1990s. Widowed in 2004, Georgina moved to Riverdale, New York to reside with her family. Loving known as ‘Mima’ or ‘Abuela’ by all, she soon became a fixture at St. Margaret’s, Bronx/Manhattan CYO and Bronx Hawk basketball games. There was nothing she loved more than a long day of basketball surrounded by family and friends. Georgina will lovingly be remembered for her devotion to her Catholic faith, family, sports (especially the New York Yankees), Cuban croquetas, café con leche very light with extra sugar, and the Game Show Network. She is survived by her daughter, Georgina, son-in-law, Angel, granddaughters, Georgina, Angela, and Cristina, in-law, Angel, her nieces, nephews, and the Gandia family who she loved as her adopted children and grandchildren.
The viewing will be held at the Riverdale-on-Hudson Funeral Home on Sunday, July 17 from 2 until 5 PM. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Margaret of Cortona Church on Monday, July 18 at 9:45 AM. Interment to follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in White Plains, NY. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York in Georgina’s memory.
