On March 13, 2023 Catherine Sherry, loving daughter, sister, aunt, grand-aunt & great grand-aunt passed away. She grew up in Manhattan with her mother and sister Florence and then moved to Riverdale in December 1979.  

She worked for B. Altman & Co. for 47 years as an Executive Secretary.  Catherine had a passion for reading, visiting the New York Public library on a weekly basis.  She truly believed that a book was a best friend.  She could count on Mr. Lang, her boss, to give her a hard-covered novel for her birthday and Christmas.  This tradition continued for many years, long after they both retired.  

Catherine was a devout Catholic who you would find praying her rosary on the bus or train to work.  She was a member of the St. Margaret Leisure Club and enjoyed their many trips. Being a trivia buff, you would find her daily in front of the television watching Jeopardy followed by Wheel of Fortune.  She would start her day reading the New York Daily News, completing the crossword puzzle with a HOT cup of coffee and then a word search puzzle.  Catherine continued her independence riding the #7 bus down to 231st Street to do weekly shopping and stopping for lunch at a local restaurant.  You could also find her knitting for family members.  Her skills ranged from creating winter hats and baby blankets to Irish sweaters.  These of course were wrapped in her collection of B. Altman gift boxes.  

Holidays were important family times.  She enjoyed taking her nieces to see the 5th Avenue holiday windows.  On the way home she would bring home pies from Horn & Hardart’s for all to enjoy.  Catherine introduced her nieces to Broadway shows and the music of the times in addition to trips to the World’s Fair.  She enjoyed a good healthy 98 years.  Not looking her age, she would tell everyone how her favorite grand-nephew, at the age of 3, remarked, “Aunt Catherine, you have no cracks!”  She was devoted to her family both near and far, enjoying letters from as far away as Victoria, BC.

Aunt Catherine brought unending love to her family and relished when they would visit.  She will be truly missed.   

A wake will be held at Riverdale-on-Hudson Funeral Home, located at 6110 Riverdale Ave Bronx, NY from 2 to 5 pm on Sunday, March 19, 2023. Catherine’s life will be celebrated at a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, March 20th 2023 at 9:45 am at St. Margaret of Cortona Church. Interment Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne NY.
