Bernadette A. Casey

Bernadette A. Casey (nee Doherty) entered into Eternal Rest on the 5th Sunday of Lent, March 26th 2023 at White Plains Hospital after a bravely-fought battle with cancer. Up until that point, she was a vibrant 80 years, longing to live and laugh amongst those she loved. Born on March 7th,1943. Bernadette was the daughter of the late Jimmy Doherty (Drumfries, Co. Donegal) and Nancy Egan Doherty, (Kilmihill, Co Clare.) Bernadette is survived by her partner, Donie O’Sullivan, her only son, Christopher Casey, of Riverdale, NY, the pride and joy, light of her life. Left to cherish her memory are former husband, William E. Casey, brothers, Jimmy Doherty, Francis Doherty, her sister Ann Harkin, and sisters-in-law, Patsy Doherty and Pamela Doherty.

Bernadette is pre-deceased by her brothers, Edmond Doherty (1985) and Donald Doherty (2014). Missed fondly by several nieces and nephews who knew and loved her as “Aunt B.” Jenny Tejada, Chris’s girlfriend, family, neighbors, and friends, old and new, who will always hold her in their hearts. 

Bernadette was generous, fun-loving, giving and kind, beautiful soul with a wild sense of humor. Bernadette’s good and caring heart shaped everything she did.

Bernadette worked in the Comptroller’s office and the Office of Finance at Manhattan College, Bronx, NY. It was in the Bronx where she felt at home, never forgetting her Irish heritage roots, enjoying many a visit to Ireland where she enjoyed the ceol agus craic (music and fun). Faith and prayer were a big part of her life, Bernadette never wavered in her faith in God and never gave up hope. Bernadette enjoyed life and everyone admired how she never let her illness stop her. 

Bernadette was an active member of St. Margaret’s of Cortona Church in Riverdale, NY, and St. Barnabas RC Church. McLean Avenue, in Yonkers. She was a Eucharistic Minister and a volunteer kindergarten teacher’s aide for many years. 

A wake will be held at Riverdale-on-Hudson Funeral Home, located at 6110 Riverdale Ave Bronx, NY from 4 to 8 pm on Friday, March 31, 2023. Bernadette’s life will be celebrated at a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, April 1, 2023 at 10:45 am at St. Margaret of Cortona Church. Interment St. Mary’s Cemetery, Yonkers NY.
