Violet Nelida Kelly

Violet Nelida Kelly (nee Niesler), a loving mother, cherished grandmother and great-grandmother, and a pillar of her community, peacefully passed away on May 6, 2023. Violet's life was characterized by love, generosity, and a deep commitment to her faith, family and community. She was known as a strong, confident person, who always stood up for what she believed and was generous to those in need. A deeply loyal and thoughtful soul, Violet’s friends and family often relied on her for advice, guidance, and compassion. 

Violet was born on February 3, 1930, and was predeceased by her beloved husband, Martin Kelly. Together, they shared a bond of love and companionship that served as the foundation of their family. Violet's children, Andrea P. McGowan (Thomas), Martin W. Kelly (Rena), and James A. Kelly (Mary Ann), were the pride and joy of her life, and her love and support for them knew no bounds.

The happiness in Violet's life expanded with the addition of her seven grandchildren, Jacqueline, Kristina, Audrey, Julia, Caroline, Natalie, and James, and her four great-grandchildren Maggie, Aria, Francis, And Eli. She adored each of them and cherished the special moments they shared together. Her grandchildren could always count on their Oma to be present and give her unwavering support at each milestone. 

Violet's educational journey began at Hunter High School, where she graduated as a member of the class of 1947, setting the stage for her future successes. She continued her academic pursuits at Hunter College, a Wistarion, where she graduated in 1951 with a Bachelor's degree in Biology. Subsequently, she was awarded a research grant at Mount Holyoke College, where she simultaneously earned her Master’s degree in Physiology.

Violet began her career working for Pfizer, where for several years she contributed her talents and expertise to the development of various pharmaceutical products, including the well-known Visine eye drops. Violet's contributions to the pharmaceutical industry left a lasting impact and showcased her dedication to making a difference.

Violet's faith played a central role in her life, and she was a devoted communicant of St. Margaret of Cortona Church. She served as the president of the church's Guild for many years and sang in their choir, demonstrating her constant commitment to her faith community. She led several Girl Scout troops and various Girl Scout activities throughout Yonkers. She also volunteered her time at Wave Hill in Riverdale. Violet's charitable work was a testament to her compassionate nature. For years, she organized fundraising efforts with the largest flea market in the area. Additionally, she generously offered her time and expertise in valued collectibles to the Wayside Thrift shop in Yonkers, a nonprofit organization that aided single mothers and underserved members of the community. 

Violet will be remembered for her selflessness, kindness, and dedication to helping others. Her memory will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew her.

In addition to her numerous accomplishments and charitable works, Violet and her predeceased husband were known for their love of travel, including annual family summer excursions. They were also proud members of the Fr. Kolping's German Society, where they shared many fond memories with their longtime friends and family. 

As we bid farewell to Violet, let us celebrate her remarkable life and may her memory serve as a reminder to cherish our loved ones, embrace acts of kindness, and live a life of love and generosity.

A wake will be held at Riverdale on Hudson funeral home, located at 6110 Riverdale Ave Bronx, NY from 4pm to 7pm on Tuesday May 9, 2023. Violet Kelly's life will be celebrated at a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Margaret’s of Cortona Church at 6000 Riverdale Ave Bronx, NY 10471 at 9:45am on Wednesday May 10, 2023. Interment to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, NY.
