Seán Sullivan
Seán Sullivan passed on January 23, 2024. He is predeceased by his parents, John and Mary (nee McCarthy) Sullivan, his sister-in-law Patricia Sullivan, and his two nephews, Joshua and Shane Sullivan. He is survived by his sisters Tara McCaffrey and Maureen Neilan and his brother Brendan Sullivan; his brother-in-laws John McCaffrey and Oliver Neilan; and his sister-in-law Tamara Sullivan; his nieces Laura Kraft, Meghan Thomson, Tara Neilan, Taylor McCaffrey and Jillian Rauch, and his nephew John-Michael McCaffrey, and many great nieces and nephews. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, and cousins in the U.S., Ireland, and England.
Seán was intelligent, kind, unassuming, self-effacing, and possessed a wonderful sense of humor. He began life in the Highbridge section of the Bronx before the Sullivan family moved to Riverdale, where Seán enjoyed the rest of his life. He had wonderful memories of playing for the A’s in the Riverdale Little League, playing roller hockey in St. Margaret’s or P.S. 81 school yards, or ice skating at Indian Pond, Van Cortlandt, or Kelton’s Ice Rink.
After graduating from St. Margaret’s, Seán attended All Hallows High School, where he would spend the next 51 years of his life – first as a student, then as a baseball and hockey coach. After graduating from Iona College, he continued at All Hallows as a math teacher, vice principal, and finally, as school principal. While coaching, he took the baseball and hockey teams to multiple CHSAA championships. Seán was also the Director of the Archdiocesan Math Committee and led the St. John’s University College Advantage Program as well as the Inner City Jobs Program for the school. He also created the Montefiore Mentoring in Medicine Program for students interested in the health field. The role most cherished by Seán, though, was as Coordinator of the Foròige Leadership for Life Programme at National University of Ireland at Maynooth University. This program brought high school students from around the world to Ireland for one week every summer. The Foróige Leadership for Life is a learning opportunity for young leaders and offers participants a chance to develop the skills and qualities of strong leadership. Seán was always looking for ways to provide opportunities for his students that he hoped would carry them forward to a successful life rooted in the Catholic faith.
Seán cherished his Irish heritage and had a strong connection to County Cork, the home county of his dad and of his mother’s parents. He faithfully visited Ireland almost every year since his first trip in 1971. He found deep solace in the beauty of the country, the warmth and humor of the people, and most especially, in the love he gave and received from aunts, uncles, and cousins there.
After his years of service to All Hallows, Seán went on to work as Associate Superintendent for Catholic High Schools for the Archdiocese of New York. Seán loved his time at the Arch. He met some of the most incredible people there and made some of his deepest and dearest friendships, all the while working to improve the lives of our high school students.
