John “Johnny" P. Cooney

John “Johnny" P. Cooney, 37, of Riverdale, New York passed away on August 16, 2024, after a valiant battle with a long term illness.

Johnny was the beloved son of Michael Cooney (deceased) and Eileen (Conlan) Cooney. He was born on October 13, 1986 in Englewood, New Jersey and attended St. Gabriel's Grammar School, Riverdale, NY and Fordham Preparatory School.  He also attended St. John's University and Westchester County Community College.

He is survived by his mother Eileen Cooney, his brother Willie, his uncle, aunts, cousins and his devoted, loving partner of many years, Kelly Feeney.

Johnny was a proud member of the New York City Sanitation Department where he worked for 12 years and exemplified New York City Strongest.

A kind, loving man, who reached out to others to offer his hand in friendship or support.  The people who comprise his circle of friends included pre-K friends through his fellow workers at the Sanitation Department.  He loved playing softball, golf, and driving his Dodge Ram pickup truck.  He was an avid country music fan, enjoyed rooting for the METS, attending concerts and loved Irish music.  Johnny and Kelly loved dining out and spending time with friends and family.  As much as Kelly was devoted to John, John was devoted to Kelly.  He was always there to help her find the solution to problems she was facing in her classroom.  John's mantra was "The goal is for today to be better than yesterday, but not as good as tomorrow"

Viewing will be held on Wednesday, August 21st, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Riverdale-on-Hudson Funeral Home, 6110 Riverdale Avenue, Bronx, New York 10471.  A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday, August 22 at 10:00 A.M at St. Gabriel's Church, corner West 235th and Netherland Avenue, Bronx, NY  10463 followed by interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, New York.
