Mary O’Brien, 84, of Riverdale, NY, passed away peacefully in her home early Monday, August 13th, 2018. For many years, Mary portrayed true strength and amazing courage during her battle with lung cancer. Mary was born in Newcastle West, Co. Limerick. At the age of 19, she boarded the Britannic and sailed to the United States. She was a longtime employee of Aer Lingus and had been retired since the age of 60. Mary is predeceased by her sister Theresa (Dolan). Mary is survived by two beloved daughters, Joan and Kathleen and a loving grandmother of two; Michael John and Nicole Caitlin. She is sister to Johanna (Holmes), Patrick and James (O’Grady). She is also survived by dozens of nieces, nephews and other close relatives.
Throughout Mary’s life, she loved to travel. She traveled to places such as Ireland, Scotland, London, Japan and Russia to name a few. She enjoyed playing Scrabble with friends and family, watching her Yankees on television and she loved her crossword puzzles. Mary will forever be remembered for her strength, wisdom and unconditional love. Although Mary is no longer in our physical presence, the virtues and values she shared will live on in our hearts forever. Mary taught the people around her the value of independence, kindness and faith. Throughout the years Mary lived, she displayed what it really meant to have faith and trust in God, despite fear or pain. She was a fighter and will always be remembered for her incredible and enduring strength.
Reposing Thursday August 16th 2018 from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at Riverdale-on-Hudson Funeral Home, 6110 Riverdale Avenue, Bronx NY. Mass of Christian Burial 9:45 am Friday at St. Margaret of Cortona Church. Interment Gate of Heaven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Sloan Kettering Cancer Institute Or Calvary Home Hospice.
