David L. Tom (1946 – 2015)
Eunice A. Tom (1947 – 2022)
Eunice Tom passed away on July 23, 2022 after a long battle with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. As per her wishes, she will be buried with David, her husband of over forty years.
David and Eunice grew up together near Dykman Street in Upper Manhattan. As teenagers their first dates were to the laundromat. David allegedly played basketball and stickball. They loved doo-wop, Motown, and the golden oldies. They married in 1971 and stayed together until David’s passing in 2016 from diabetes and heart disease. Their relationship was one to aspire to.
David was an elementary school teacher and long-time administrator at P.S. 124 in Chinatown. He received his MBA from NYU but decided to continue to pursue a career in education to focus on family and health.
Eunice also began as an elementary school teacher, followed by travel agent, and realtor. Her most important job was to raise her two sons in Riverdale.
David's long school breaks allowed the family to frequently travel with their boys, David (DJ) and Steven. They traveled throughout the world from Europe to Asia and Africa. Every vacation was an opportunity to learn some history.
Careful savings and wise investments allowed David and Eunice to retire to Honolulu in 2004. Their pace slowed in Hawaii. David even regularly attended qi gong in the park. They continued to travel but usually internationally in large organized groups. Eunice gardened and practiced yoga. They loved being tour guides to family visiting the state.
When David passed away, Eunice focused on her grandchildren. She lived close to Steven, her younger son, and frequently picked her grandson Marcus up from school. She loved to spoil her grandchildren and couldn’t wait to visit her older grandchildren, Justin and Jillian, in New York. She spent nearly every afternoon in Hawaii swimming in her pool and talking with neighbors at the hot tub.
David and Eunice are survived by their two sons (David and Steven), three grandchildren (Jillian, Justin and Marcus), two daughter-in-laws (Jessica and Stephanie), Eunice’s sister (Virginia), David’s siblings (Anna, Evelyn, Francis, Kenneth and Randolph) and many additional friends and family.
A memorial service celebrating the life of David and Eunice will be held at Riverdale-on-Hudson Funeral Home, 6110 Riverdale Ave., Bronx NY on Monday, Aug 1, 2022 at 10AM. After the service, they will be buried together at the Kensico cemetery.
