Maureen “Whitey” Kelly (nee Carey) passed away on Wednesday, January 18th at the age of 58. She was surrounded by her family. Maureen was born to Jim and Margaret Carey on August 1, 1964 in the Bronx, NY. She was the seventh out of ten children. In February 1992, Maureen married Billy Kelly, and together they raised two children, Billy and Shannon, in Riverdale.
Maureen is predeceased by her husband, Billy Kelly. She is also predeceased by her parents, Margaret and Jim Carey; her in-laws, Mary and Daniel Kelly; her niece, Sarah Carey Burns; her sister-in-law, Colleen Kelly; and her sister, Kerry Ann Carey.
Maureen is survived by her son, Billy, and her daughter, Shannon, as well as a large extended family including brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews.
Maureen lived her entire life in Riverdale and was happiest here with her family and closest friends. She dedicated her life to serving the community, spending most of her time at Sid Field and at Downey’s. She was always willing to help a friend in need and went to great lengths to make sure that people were taken care of. Some of her famous lines included, “It’s all about the kids,” and “It costs nothing to be kind.”
Maureen was a friend to all who knew her and will be missed dearly by her friends and family.
