Amalia Lauria was born on April 13, 1935 and entered into eternal life on July 6, 2024 with her daughters by her side. She was a devoted and loving wife to Angelo (deceased 2005) and mother to Maria (Aldo), Michael (deceased 2009) and Teresa (Raymond). She loved her grandchildren: Jon Stephen (Whitney), Emily and Raymond, often referring to them as her life savers, especially after the passing of her husband and son. She lived long enough to meet and hold her great grandson, Vincent, bringing her much joy in her final days.
Amalia was born in the southern region of Italy in the town of Calvello, in the province of Potenza to Michele' and RosaMaria Abbate. She was the second youngest of eight children: Raffaele, Maria, Ida, Alessandro, Antonio, Federico and Anna. She met the love of her life, Angelo, as a young girl, as he was best friends with her brother, Federico.
Growing up during war time, Amalia wanted to help provide for her family and at the age of 14, she began taking lessons from a neighbor on how to make clothing from a knitting machine.
She spent hours on end standing, working on the weighted machine to produce sweaters, scarves, blankets, hats that she would use to barter for other items in order to help provide for her family. Her work was in high demand, as she continued to challenge herself by incorporating intricate designs in everything she made. She not only knitted on the machine, but also by hand and she loved to crochet making beautiful sweaters, blankets, baby clothes, tablecloths and bedspreads.
On January 26, 1957, Amalia and Angelo were married and then welcomed their first child, Maria Antonietta. Angelo then made the journey to America to join his parents and siblings in hopes of providing for a better future for his wife and child. In August 1958, Amalia and Maria made the journey over to America to join Angelo in the Washington Heights section of New York.
Next, they welcomed a son, Michael, and their family was made complete with the birth of their daughter, Teresa.
The family moved to Riverdale in June of 1975 and resided there for 20 years before moving to Yorktown Heights, where Amalia has resided for the last 30 years.
Amalia was also an accomplished cook. Her homemade pizza, lasagna, meatballs and baked ziti, cream puffs and cake were enjoyed by family and friends alike. She loved to cook, but loved that people enjoyed her food even more so.
Amalia was a woman with a beautiful soul, and who had a strong devotion to God, her family and her friends. Although she will be missed by her family and friends, we all know that she is at peace and was welcomed into the loving arms of her beloved Angelo and her son, Michael.
