Gilbert (Gil) Diaz, Jr., 68, also known as Pop to many, was loved for his kindness, humor, and generosity. He died, with his wife Dorothy, son Christopher, and daughter-in-law Carly by his side at Allen Pavillion in New York, NY, on Saturday, March 15, 2025, due to complications from pneumonia.
Gilbert Jr. was born to Gilbert and Barbara Diaz in Spanish Harlem and was one of four children. Everyone loved to be around Pop, whose stories and antics made him the life of the party. He was the person everyone called when they needed something fixed. The family jokingly referred to him as MacGyver. Pop was also a collector of model cars, enjoyed fishing, and loved to visit Puerto Rico, his favorite place.
In 2012, Gil retired from the New York City Transit Authority, having worked for them for 30 years.
Gil is survived by his wife, Dorothy; his children Gilbert III, Doreen, and Christopher; his grandchildren, Gilbert IV, Olivia, Dorian Lee, Cameron, and Hunter; his siblings, David and Danny; and many great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter, Amanda.
We are so very fortunate to have been graced with Gil’s love and affection. May he rest in peace forever remembered as the heart and soul of the family. Memorial services will be held in Gilbert’s honor on Saturday, March 22 from 2:00 pm-5:00 pm at Riverdale on Hudson Funeral Home.
