Jeanne Marie Powers, 99, passed away on Thursday, January 7 at her home in Riverdale, Bronx.
Jeanne was the eldest daughter of Hubert Powers and Grace Wall Powers. She was born on January 11, 1921 in the Bronx, which she proudly called home for just shy of 100 years.
Jeanne began working to help support her family in 1937. She began her lifelong career at Royal Globe/World Insurance Company at the age of 16, while still attending Walton High School in the Bronx. Jeanne's strong work ethic and commitment to learning lead to her quickly rising up the ranks. She was one of the first women in the company to be promoted to a management position, and eventually became a superintendent. She remained a loyal and devoted employee for over 30 years, until she retired.
A profoundly kind, quick witted, and generous woman, Jeanne was deeply loved by many. She was a life-long devout Catholic and a member of St Gabriel’s Church, and was known for her dedicated service to her community. Jeanne loved her family and was very proud of her Irish heritage. She spent much of her time tracking down lost relatives up until her final days. Jeanne was known by all for quick wit and ever present sense of humor. In her spare time, Jeanne enjoyed long walks, fine dining, travelling and reading the New York Times. She was a New York Times crossword puzzle whiz.
Jeanne is predeceased by her beloved mother Grace, her father Hubert, her sisters Patricia Powers Atkins and Claire Powers Tully, her brother Hubert and her nephews Kevin Atkins and Mark Tully.
Jeanne is survived by her nephews Matthew Tully and his wife Lori of Woodbridge, Virginia, Michael Tully and his wife Heidi of Scottsdale, Arizona, and her nieces Irene Tully of Santa Monica, California and Theresa Tully Lobenstein and her husband Tom of Gilbert, Arizona, many grand nieces and nephews, a great grand nephew and clan of cousins and extended family members.
The family would like to thank Jeanne's incredibly loving and loyal caregivers, friends and neighbors for their tender care and support. You were a huge part of her family.
